Final Post

Time flies! I had a wonderful time during the class. I have learnt new things in this module. Ranging from 7Cs to oral presentations. The feedback from Ms Goh and classmates are valuable as they help me identify my weak areas. These honest and constructive criticisms are hard to come by.

The small classroom makes learning effective and conducive. Students get to interact with each other more often and the lecturer can understand the students better. Although the many assignments were taxing, they helped us apply the skills that we learnt while fresh. The research project was also interesting as I had never did a proposal before. On top of it, being the leader of a group with three females was a different experience from commanding a group of males in the army.

With the things learnt in this module, I hope to improve my weak areas such as writing in 7cs, punctuality, initiating questions etc. Last and foremost, I would like to thank Ms Goh for her constructive criticism and my fellow classmates as well. I believe that the skills taught in this module will be useful for our future endeavours.

Oral Presentation

It was an experience during ES2007S presentations. Other presentations I had gave for other modules were not as "scary" as this. It might be because most of the presentations were only giving out information while this presentation aims to promote something.

For my part, I was rather nervous at the start. It was because that since I was the first speaker, I had to set the tone for the presentation. On top of it, my group was presenting last. The concentration span of the audience must had waned after the second presentation. Hence, there was some pressure to wake the audience up and keep their attention. Overall, I felt that I did fine. I managed to speak more fluently as compared to the first and maintained most of the strengths.

Although the presentation was not as persuausive as it should be, I felt that the group did well overall. The most overwhelming part was the Q&A session. Due to time constraints, we could not answer all the questions. On top of it, there were some questions that were not answered thoroughly. It was a pity as I felt if we had practiced more on Q&A, there might not be so much jittery.

Finally, I would like to extend my thanks to my Team members who cooperated throughout the whole preparation and to everyone which helped me improved. Thank You!

Intercultural-communication

Intercultural communication requires us to withhold judgement and tolerate ambiguity.

I remembered once I have a project mate who came from Pakistan. He was often late for meetings and takes a long time for him to settle down. On top of it, he often slipped into Urdu (National Language of Pakistan) and became very aggressive. We found what he did very offensive and told him directly. However, his ways hardly change.

However, the things he did are prevalent in their culture (http://www.kwintessential.co.uk/resources/global-etiquette/pakistan.html). Punctuality is not common and they are highly emotional during talks. On top of it, they take time to "warm up" with other people. They also tend to talk to people in an indirect way leaving people to guess what they are trying to say. If we had know these cultures before hand, we may not take it so offensively and told him off.

I feel that it is important to be patient with others to find out what their culture is before coming to a decision. We also need to understand our own cultural biasness. By doing so can help us understand that not every culture have the same belief, enabling us to have more tolerance for other cultures. Effective inter cultural can enable us to work better in teams.

Dear Sir/Mdm,
FX/Derivatives Data Analyst-Job Requisition Number: 24841

I am applying for the above job position found on Bloomberg's career page. My keen interest in financial instruments have lead to a search for reliable sources of information available to all, hence Bloomberg. I believe information is power and I would like to work in a field which comprises of financial instruments.

I am a highly motivated individual in my final year of studies, majoring in Statistics at the National University of Singapore(NUS). I am equipped with pc-skills including basic C programming language. I have a sound knowledge of currencies, the fundamentals that can move the market etc. For example, how the release of Non-Farm Payroll and interest rate decisions can affect the market. I have started a demo trading account in January 2010 with +84 pips.

My qualifications also include excellent communication skills,a good team player and effective research skills. Projects in school have honed my skills in the above areas. I have references from my previous employer supporting the above. Being a Statistics major, I had taken many modules that require good analytical skills. As English is the language of choice while doing projects, I am fluent in the language. Although I am not fluent in Japanese, I am willing to learn. During my time in National Service (NS), I was appointed into my unit's safety committee on top of my vocation. My role is to spot ,report and remove hazard areas in the camp. I have to be detailed oriented to fulfill my role in the committee. I held 3 appointments during NS which indicates my ability to multi task and good organization skills. Being independent is also needed as often I had to finish my tasks without the help of my peers. I am awarded best soldier of the month before the end of my service and had an "outstanding" grade for both conduct and performance. This shows that I fulfilled the role of all the appointments held well.

I believe that I can be an asset to the team being a highly motivated and detailed oriented individual. I do hope you will look favourably at my application. I look forward to meeting you in person to further discuss what my enclosed resume is not able to furnish. Thank you.

Blog Post 2: Resolving Interpersonal Conflicts

This happened 10 years back when I was still in secondary school. It happened between 2of my friends A and B who are close to me.

They were very close before the incident happen. They played pokemon with their gameboys together, eat together, do their work together etc. One day, in our math class, one of my classmates sitting behind both of them forget to bring a calculator. As her neighbour did not bring it too, she decided one to borrow from A and B. At that time, both A and B were still using theirs. However, when A had finished using his, B took A's calculator and lent it to the person behind them. "A" was furious saying that taking his things without permission and loaning it to others is very rude. But B felt that A should not make a fuss over it although it may be wrong of him not to ask permission first but helping other is not a bad thing to do. After which A insisted that he did not say he wanted to lend them in the first place. B was angry and he took back A's calculator suddenly from the hands of the person using it and place his on the table instead. After this incident, they never talk to each other for the rest of their secondary school life despite being in the same class, CCA etc.

On hindsight, it may seem rather childish for both of them to behave in such a way. But at the time, both of them are in my circle of friends. It felt very awkward and uneasy when we want to organise outing etc.

What can third parties do to help them resolve their issue?

Blog Post 1: Effective Communication Skills

Effective communication skills are necessary in society today. Speaking to people, exchanging emails and sms are common in our daily lives. There are many times where listeners are unable to recieve the full meaning of the message that is being brought across due to bad communication process.
For example, in a Statistics class presentation, it may be appropriate for someone to skip definitions and use technical jargons throughout his presentation as the students in the class should be able to comprehend it. However, given the same presentation but to a different group of audience belonging to other field of studies, he may not be able to put his point across as smoothly.
I feel that it is important for us to know the different tools needed to put our point across to other parties in different circumstances. This can aid us in our job interviews, presentations and fostering relationship with others. Poor communication skills can lead to misunderstandings and conflicts. In our multicultural society, misunderstandings between different group of people can disrupt the harmony of the nation.
