Effective communication skills are necessary in society today. Speaking to people, exchanging emails and sms are common in our daily lives. There are many times where listeners are unable to recieve the full meaning of the message that is being brought across due to bad communication process.
For example, in a Statistics class presentation, it may be appropriate for someone to skip definitions and use technical jargons throughout his presentation as the students in the class should be able to comprehend it. However, given the same presentation but to a different group of audience belonging to other field of studies, he may not be able to put his point across as smoothly.
I feel that it is important for us to know the different tools needed to put our point across to other parties in different circumstances. This can aid us in our job interviews, presentations and fostering relationship with others. Poor communication skills can lead to misunderstandings and conflicts. In our multicultural society, misunderstandings between different group of people can disrupt the harmony of the nation.
Hi Kenneth,
ReplyDeleteThat's a mysterious picture you have posted, haha =)
I can see that from the style of your blog, you prefer simplicity and that's a good thing, make it easier for me to read.
Yes, statistics, I have taken classes on statistics before and I understand what you mean by being bombarded with mathematical terms. It can be frustrating for someone with no mathematics background. Therefore, I agree that it is important for one to utilize different tools appropriately during different occasions in order to achieve maximum comprehension by the audience.
It is true that in a multicultural society like Singapore, effective communication is especially important. as people have different values and beliefs. As a result it takes greater effort to form a common understanding between us. However, as long as we put in the effort into ensuring effective communication, we can minimize misunderstandings and conflicts.
Kenneth, I like your example of statistics lecture, perhaps you can bring in more interesting examples in the future posts. I am looking forward to it.=)

Hi Kenneth,
ReplyDeleteThe overall consistency in your blog is appealing: your description of yourself, your writing style and even your layout all spells out a no-nonsense style and speaks of a person who knows what he wants in life.
Truly indeed as what you say, effective communications brings us many benefits and the absence of it can result in misunderstanding and conflicts which are undesirable. The only thing I can point out is perhaps the rather abrupt ending to the post. Perhaps you can wrap it up with a final concluding statement about the importance of effective communication to you or write words like Finally/Lastly to inform reader that you are ending a post so the ending is slick and clean just like how everything in this blog is :)

Hi Kenneth,
ReplyDeleteThe first thing that stood out when I saw your blog was the simple, easy layout. It is very pleasant to the eyes as it is not cluttered and makes it easy to read and surf.
The main points covered in your post are relevant and small examples help to support your statements like the everyday interactions between people through emails and sms.
I especially liked your example on Statistics presentations as it explains clearly and appropriately the importance of good presentations and how they should be. The importance of communication in the multicultural society of Singapore and everywhere else is another good point you brought up.
Just one thing I would like to point out is that the ideas in the last two sentences could have been written in one sentence as there is some overlap between them and it sounds repetitive.
Overall, an interesting read :)
